Chanel Cruises into Cuba for the Island’s First Modern Day Fashion Show

As I write this blog post, there is a winter storm raging outside of my office. An inch or two of snow an hour and it’s freezing. So it’s no surprise that my thoughts keep turning south… to Cuba.

Ever since I saw Chanel’s  2016-2017 Cruise Collection in their Boston Store, I’ve wondered what it would be like to travel to a place that was off limits for so long. A place where time has literally stood still.

In 1959 Castro implemented his communist model to take over all private property and businesses on the island. Couple that with the embargo by the United States a once prosperous, popular vacation spot turned into a place where time just…stopped. Now that sanctions are lifted, there’s a renewed interest in the beautiful island. And leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to hold the first fashion show and bring the fashionable and the famous to Havana. Lagerfeld created a colorful collection that might be the new look of Cuba: vintage style with a modern day twist. The models wore some menswear inspired looks from the 1950’s, but with a nod toward a very bright future.
