Meet Bobby from Boston…The King of Vintage

I stepped into the shop and I was instantly transported back in time. I was in complete awe of everything around me. And there was A LOT around me. Men’s suit jackets, pants, an entire room of shoes! Shirts, sweaters, cuff links, hats.

 IMG_0999 IMG_1005

 IMG_0996IMG_0998

Mixed between this beautifully curated collection of men’s clothes were other items from eras gone by. A well-worn baseball glove, a pile of pennants from local high schools. Under a table was a line of vintage suitcases and bags.

   IMG_1072

I was inside of  an amazing vintage shop at 19 Thayer Street in the South End of Boston. Not just any vintage shop. I was in Bobby from Boston. And holding court in the middle of it all, was the man himself…Bobby Garnett.

Bobby has been collecting mostly men’s vintage clothing, accessories and anything cool, since the 70’s. He does have women’s vintage, but it’s mainly men’s.  His collection is so vast and desirable that he is known from Boston to Hollywood…from London to Tokyo.

IMG_1073

Hollywood has come calling for items to clothe actors in over 50 movies. It started in 1990 with “Mermaids” starring Cher and Winona Ryder. In that movie, the black combat boots Ryder’s character was extremely attached to and refused to take off, were from Bobby’s.

IMG_1100

He’s also helped other costume designers for movies filmed in and around Massachusetts. They’re huge hits like Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed”. Also, “Shutter Island” and the soon to be released gangster movie “Black Mass” with Johnny Depp.

IMG_1047

And it’s not just movies shot in Massachusetts. He has a close relationship with Oscar-winning Costume Designer, Sandy Powell. She worked on “The Departed”,  but also on a number of other films that needed clothing from Bobby’s.

He knows everyone and everyone knows him.

IMG_1084

He’s been all over the world to dig for vintage treasures. He’s famous in Tokyo. He was even featured on the cover of the Japanese men’s style magazine, Clutch. When I asked what they wrote about him in the article, he said, “I don’t know. I don’t speak Japanese!” Then he just laughed.

IMG_1074

We laughed a lot during our interview. He is very funny and has a million stories to tell.  My favorite was this one: A girl stopped into the store just as they were about to close. He stayed open for her and she struck up a conversation with him. He told me that he kept looking at her, that she looked so familiar. Finally he broke his silence and said, “You look just like Scarlett Johansson”.  She smiled and said, “I am Scarlett Johansson”.

IMG_1085

Her husband at the time, Ryan Reynolds, was filming a movie in Boston. She heard about Bobby’s shop (who hasn’t?) and she wanted to pick up a gift for Ryan.

But Bobby’s collection goes way beyond the South End store. He has a WAREHOUSE  just north of Boston which is filled to the brim with vintage men’s and women’s clothing that dates back to the 1930’s. When I was in the store I met a couple who had just come from there.

The woman bought a black suit from the  40’s.  I told her that I was going to the warehouse in a few weeks. Her husband smiled and told me to “carbo load” and be “well hydrated”.  He said the warehouse is so huge, there is so much to see, that I would need to be well nourished before I went in. Duly noted. I will follow his advice because I want to see everything.

Bobby told me to call and make an appointment, but not to be disappointed if the man in charge of the warehouse couldn’t show me around. “Sometimes”,  he said, ” those Hollywood people are there”.

Bobby, you make me laugh. I look forward to seeing you again my friend.

IMG_0940

Now I know to go in on a Sunday. That’s the day he sees visitors and has time to chat. Of course, I will probably have to wait a bit while he talks to everyone else who stops in to see him. But it’s worth it.

Project Beauty: Spring into the New Season with Neiman Marcus

It’s been a rough winter here in Boston. I’ve lived in my winter boots and made my way through 7 feet of snow. Granted, my winter boots are cute, but oh how I missed my Manolos!

So when I got the invitation to attend a fashion show at my favorite store I was thrilled! Hope Springs eternal! An evening at Neiman Marcus for their Project Beauty Event. A fashion show featuring the hottest Spring trends along with the newest in skin care to help us recover from the snowiest winter ever. I couldn’t wait!

I dusted off my Manolos (no I’m not kidding. I really had to dust them off…that’s how long it’s been since I could wear them).

Project Beauty was just what I needed. Before the show Neiman Marcus’ Public Relations Coordinator, April Riccio, told us that the Project Beauty Event was a chance for us to take care of ourselves, inside and out. To feel good about ourselves. Reminding us to take care of our skin and to look fabulous after.

Boston Radio Personality and the all around fantastic Sue Brady was the event’s emcee. Looking incredible in an Herve Leger bandage dress, she colorfully described the looks along with the beauty products used on each amazing model.

Shopping for a Cause: Women helping Women

What’s better than picking out a fantastic new outfit at your favorite store? How about paying it forward at the same time?

Dress for Success Boston and Talbot’s in Hingham, Massachusetts teamed up to do just that. On Thursday, March 5, 10% of all sales went to Dress for Success. While shoppers planned their new outfits, they just helped underprivileged women who need new clothes to get back on their feet and back into the workforce.

Those who couldn’t make the event were invited to donate work appropriate attire. It was a chance to give confidence and style. Always a winning look.

Kim Todd, Executive Director of Dress for Success Boston, was thrilled to work with Talbots on this project.

IMG_0314

“The two organizations align very well together, as Talbot’s clothing is perfect for women who want to project a classy, professional image.”

This event wasn’t exclusive to just Hingham. It was held at 24 stores around the country. Todd says, “Customers could drop off clothing donations for Dress for Success affiliates, make a monetary contribution and a percentage of sales was donated back to Dress for Success.”

IMG_0313

And to everyone that helped out that day, or helps with a donation, Kim Todd would like to say, Thank You.

“I would like to tell them that every donation, whether it be clothing, volunteer time, or a financial donation, makes a huge difference.  We are only able to do this work because so many people support the organization.”

And Todd adds, “If a person is interested in volunteering, they just need to contact us. There are many ways to help!”

They say, Clothes Make the Man. But clearly, they haven’t met the women who have benefitted from Dress for Success. If they had, that quote would read: Clothes Make the WOMAN.

Check out their website and see what’s coming up next!

What Color IS This Dress?!

I spent hours on Facebook Thursday night debating the color of a dress with three of my friends. And their friends. The Internet blew up Thursday February 26 when the photo of one dress caused millions of people to see it in four different colors.

I saw it in white and gold. But there were plenty of people who disagreed saying THEY saw it in black and blue. What? Clearly it was white and gold! Right?  This is the first picture I saw. White and Gold.

                                              IMG_0296

Then I did some research and found out the name of the company that made it. And that it was listed on Amazon as BLACK AND BLUE! What?!

Here is the picture as it appears on Amazon:

 IMG_1530

The more articles I read about the dress, the more my friends and I just couldn’t agree.  One article said you see the colors depending on your mood. Another one said it depended on how your eyes process color. Ugh!

So here’s what I determined in the end. I like the dress in white and gold. I could totally see some fabulous fashionista wearing it with a big, white summer hat, super cute strappy sandals, big Chanel sunnies and carrying a cute purse. In Miami.

So maybe it’s not just beauty that’s in the eye of the beholder. It’s color too.

What colors do you see?

2015 Fashion Forecast…What to Look Forward to in the New Year

There is so much fabulous fashion to look forward to in 2015! While I don’t believe we’ll see the end of the crush of Kardashion “news” (wishful thinking), I do think we’ll have plenty of actual fashion to wait for.

I can’t wait to see more from Amal Clooney. The new Mrs Clooney wowed us in her custom designed Oscar de la Renta wedding dress and continued to make our jaws drop with amazing outfits that made us wish we could peek inside her closet. What is she going to wear in 2015? I’m sure it will be spectacular!

Lupita Nyong’o burst onto the fashion scene after a gut wrenching, award winning performance as Patsey, a young slave tortured by her owner in 12 Years a Slave. Her next role will take her to a galaxy far, far away. That’s right. Star Wars! Star Wars: Episode VII to be exact. After her beautiful looks on last year’s red carpets, it’s safe to say her 2015 wardrobe will be out of this world.

As award season approaches, the Golden Globes are coming up this month, it will be a bitter sweet time for fashionistas. We’ll see Oscar de la Renta’s designs on the red carpet, but we will miss the designer who dressed everyone from Jackie Kennedy to Oprah to Sarah Jessica Parker.

De la Renta passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer. But let’s look forward to seeing his beautiful, stunning creations light up the red carpet and continue to live on in his absence.

John Galliano is back. And he’s returning with a bang. He was hired as the Creative Director at Maison Martin Margiela this year and his first collection will be the Margiela Couture collection in January.

Paris Fall-Winter 2009/10 Haute-Couture Fashion Week - Christian Dior Runway

Galliano has been in fashion limbo since he was fired from Dior and his own label in 2011. He briefly worked with Oscar de la Renta and rumors swirled that Galliano would take the helm of de la Renta’s fashion empire.

Galliano always puts on a fun and well…interesting…fashion show. And for him to start his tenure at Margiela with Couture?! Definitely something to watch!

As for me? I’m looking forward to a full fashion calendar for the new year! I’m starting with a trip to the new Chanel store in Boston. 10,000 square feet of fabulous designed by architect Peter Marino who created their London location.

Then it’s on to the Museum of Fine Arts where I will check out the new exhibit, Hollywood Glamour: Fashion and Jewelry from the Silver Screen. The curator paired vintage jewelry with the dresses the baubles were worn with in movies from the 1930’s and 1940’s

Oscar de la Renta dies at 82

Oscar de la Renta, one of the greatest fashion designers of our time, has died at age 82 after a long battle with cancer. He just showed his Spring/Summer 2015 collection at New York Fashion Week.

A huge loss to the fashion world.

Amal Alamuddin, the new Mrs George Clooney, wore a beautiful de la Renta wedding dress which featured two layers of tulle along with hand embroidered pearls and diamante accents. According to US Weekly, Alamuddin said de la Renta “is such an elegant designer and such an elegant man.”

The Day my Fashionista Heart Fell in Love…with a Shower Curtain

When my fashionista heart falls in love, usually it’s with a pair of amazing Manolo Blahniks, or an incredible piece from Chanel.  I never thought the day would come when I would fall in love…..with a shower curtain.

I didn’t mean for it to happen. I had no plans to redecorate my bathroom. But when I saw this shower curtain which looks like the window of a Paris dress shop, suddenly I had to have it and make my dreary bathroom Parisienne Chic.

I saw it at Bed, Bath and Beyond, It was love at first sight. I only went into the store for one thing. But that changed when I saw this…..shower curtain.

After I bought it and put it up, I realized I also needed the matching accessories. And new towels. And a new rug.

After many trips back to the store, along with  trying to choose between cherry red towels or crimson towels, I finally finished. And for the first time in years…I love my bathroom. It’s tres chic!

Love the dress! It has beading!

I’ve always wanted a chandelier. And with this one, I don’t have to change the bulbs.

IMG_0046

ALWAYS ACCESSORIZE!

Adorable dress shaped soap dispenser. It has a cute little bow in the back.

IMG_0047

,IMG_0049

Not done yet! I need another set of towels in another color. I’m thinking of a dark, slate gray. And I may need a few more accessories. It’s like when you buy a dress or a new outfit. As soon as you get it you start thinking about what you can put with it. Of course I do wish I was adding a cute pair of Manolos or a new Chanel handbag…but this will have to curve my fashionista cravings for now.

Back to the store! I think I’ll get the Parisienne Chic tissue box cover…or maybe the curtain holders shaped like shoes…..

Meeting Mario Testino

Photographer Mario Testino shot the covers and much more for the September issues of British and American Vogue this year.  When I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Boston Museum of Fine Arts Fashion Council event a few years ago, he was kind enough to take a picture with me and also give me advice he often dishes out to the models he photographs. How to look your best in pictures. I still do it today. Thank you Mario. Read on and find out for yourself how to look fab in photos.

“Chin up,” he said.

I lifted my chin and then started laughing.

I glanced at the man I was being photographed with and HIS chin was up too.

He told me it was the best way to pose for a picture.

“You’re all set.” The photographer gave me back my small digital camera after taking the picture.

“Oh, can you just take one more?” I begged.

“Just one more for the beautiful woman,” my new friend said and handed the camera back to the photographer…who had his very large, professional camera in his other hand.

Clearly he was NOT pleased he had to play amateur photog for me.

But he did it.

And I laughed even harder.

How could he say no?

He couldn’t.

It was famous fashion photographer Mario Testino posing with me.

P5180888

We were at the Bravo restaurant upstairs at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. It was our last Fashion Council event for the season and Mario Testino was our guest.

For the first hour we were treated to an interview between the museum’s director, Malcolm Rogers and Mario Testino. inside the Remis Auditorium.

Then we got to ask questions.

I was the first one to raise my hand. (are you really surprised?!)

Since I read both the British and the American versions of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, I told him I was taken aback at first because I would see nudity in the British mags, but never in the American versions. I wasn’t used to it at first. Now it doesn’t bother me, but I wondered how he tailored his shoots for each magazine.

He began his answer with, “Well…let me give you my phone number….”

I countered with, “…and I’ll give you my business card…” The audience laughed and then he told me his shots for an American magazine are far different from British magazines. He has more creative “freedom”… meaning if he wants the model topless, no problem. But if it was for an American fashion magazine? Less skin, more clothes.

And I can certainly see how he’d make a model comfortable enough to expose that much.

His charisma is enthralling and quite mesmerizing.

He joked about how he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life, but he never set out to be a photographer.

When he was at home in Lima, Peru he went to school for economics and math. He hated it and quit.

Then he went to school for law, thinking he could be an ambassador for his country. Nope. That didn’t work out. Hated it and quit.

So he went to Paris and entered photography school. Didn’t love it, but he needed a visa to stay in France.

He quit that too.

But then he went to work as an apprentice for a woman he met in class. Testino loved the work of photographers Richard Avedon and Irving Penn.

So he took pictures and sold them.

Who knew his career would take him all over the world, photographing everyone who’s anyone. Including one of his closest friends, Kate Moss.

IMG_3729

He told us a great story about Moss.

When she was just starting as a model, he was at the fashion show she had just walked in. She was crying backstage. So he went up to her and tried to calm her down. He had no idea why this beautiful girl would be so upset after such a successful show.

She told him the designer hated her. She knew it because she didn’t get enough tickets so her whole family could see her.

Testino told her that was normal for a new model.

Then he said. “You can put on a little bit of perfume and it lasts. You can splash on as much cologne as you want, but it fades. You are a perfume. And you will last.”

She was just 14.

They’ve been friends ever since.

Another fabulous story?

Princess Diana.

On the day he was to photograph her for Vanity Fair they had to do it in the afternoon.

She was feeding the poor in the morning.

She made him feel very humble and it’s the reason he now makes time for certain charities.

But that shoot is famous for something else.

It’s the last time she sat down with a professional photographer.

IMG_3732

IMG_3730

Not long after she would be dead. Killed in that infamous Paris car accident.

He took the last photos of her. And she insisted the clothes she wore be auctioned off for charity.

Just listening to that story gave me the chills.

Testino also told us how he likes to take group photos, although many photographers shy away from it. He likes to create reality, a reaction.

Well, reality for me was…I got to meet the man who shot the May 2010 cover of Vogue with Sarah Jessica Parker. I cut out all of the photos of Parker and hung them on the wall in my dressing room.

IMG_3733

IMG_3734

As for my reaction?

I adored the man.

I wish I had more time to ask questions, but he was a man very much in demand at the VIP party.

But I got to meet him, get a photo with him. And I scored a few compliments too.

Not bad.

And now when I see a picture of him in British Harper’s Bazaar at a party or an event I can have a little laugh…. because in the photograph his chin will always be up.

Neil Lane, Jeweler to the Stars, Shines in Boston

The 2014 Emmy Awards is on on tonight. My favorite part is of course, the Red Carpet arrivals! I love seeing the stars decked out in fabulous dresses and bejeweled with amazing baubles. It made me think back to the night I met one of the jewelers to the stars…Neil Lane. I was a member of Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts Fashion Council and Mr Lane came in as a guest speaker. It was fun to relive that night. He told us some amazing stories. Enjoy!

Jeweler Neil Lane went from digging through trash cans for things to sell in his hometown of Brooklyn, to getting a phone call from Curators at the Louvre. They wanted a piece of his jewelry collection to put on display in one of the museum’s exhibits.

One man’s trash certainly turned out to be Neil Lane’s treasure. At first it really did take digging. Whether it was through a trash can, a flea market or scouring the jewelry shops in Paris.

Neil Lane took that often heard phrase and turned it into a jewelry empire.

I was lucky enough to meet Neil at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. He was a guest speaker at one of our Fashion Council events.

IMG_3642

I was definitely excited to meet him.  I’ve seen his jewels glam up celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger and Demi Moore.

But there is so much more to Neil Lane then just the glamorous jewels.

He told us he loved “old things”. Not just for their value, but for the history…the story behind it.

Like the piece he purchased at a Florida flea market. It was a Tiffany & Co piece from 1891. Who knew you could find something like that at a flea market? Note to self:  attend more flea markets.

Neil knows what to look for. He studied Tiffany jewelry and is an avid collector. Although his favorite era for jewels is the 19th century, from 1880-1935, he appreciates all sorts of jewelry.

And the select number of celebrities he loans them to appreciate him. When Renee Zellweger wore a Neil Lane ring to match her red Carolina Herrera dress to an awards show in 2001, she made sure to give him credit for designing it.

It was the first time he heard his name on tv. He told us his Mom heard it too…and she was so excited for him.

Neil also told us about the jewelry he has from Mae West.

IMG_3643-0

He acquired the jewelry from an estate sale.

The story is fascinating.

When Mae West’s career faltered she started doing a burlesque act. She had bodyguards around her for protection. One of those guards took his job very seriously.

And took Ms. West seriously.

He fell in love with her.

Although she didn’t reciprocate, he stayed with her until she died in 1980. Even though her beau fell on hard times, he never sold her jewelry. The estate sale took place after he passed away years later.

A true love story that could only happen in Hollywood.

Another love story involves singer Gwen Stefani and a strange connection to Oprah.

When Gwen Stefani wed Gavin Rossdale in 2002 in Los Angeles, she wore a Georgian pendant of pink tourmaline, Peridot and diamonds from Neil’s collection.

IMG_3644

Some time after the wedding. Neil got a call from one of Oprah’s reps. 15 of Oprah’s nearest and dearest wanted to pool their money and buy the necklace as a gift for Oprah’s 50th birthday.

Neil said he found himself in a slight dilemma.

Gwen had the necklace,

Oprah’s people wanted to buy the necklace.

As he’s telling us the story he starts using his hands as if they’re scales, moving them up and down while saying, “Oprah, Gwen, Oprah, Gwen…”

Yeah, you guessed it.

Oprah received the necklace for her 50th.

Such a fabulous gift!

So after many years of collecting and selling, Neil has now turned his focus from buyer to designer.

And you don’t have to be a celeb to own a piece of Neil Lane jewelry.

He has a store in Los Angeles.

He said he can experiment with different designs since celebrities are always looking for something new to wear to an event.

Such an amazing tale of a boy from Brooklyn who is now a worldwide name.

A journey in jewels.

Stories like that only happen in Hollywood. right?

They do if you’re Neil Lane.

Neil Lane is one of the sponsors of an upcoming exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Starting September 9 through March 8, 2015 the MFA will host Hollywood Glamour:  Fashion and Jewelry from the Silver Screen. It will feature jewelry and gowns from the 30’s and 40’s. It’s a must see for me and of course I’ll write about it here! Check out a preview with this link:  http://www.mfa.org/exhibitions/hollywood-glamour

Christian Louboutin at Your Fingertips

The famous red sole of the Christian Louboutin shoe can now be on your fingertips. After three years of perfecting a nail polish, Mr Louboutin released it with huge fanfare…at the Crazy Horse in Paris. A famous cabaret known for its nude shows.

A strange place to show off a new nail polish? Not for Christian Louboutin.

“This was simply me going back to my roots. Showgirls were the first people I wanted to design shoes for and the red sole originated from a bottle of red nail varnish,” he told British Vogue.

After the elaborate show, the polish was revealed.

IMG_3445

“Rouge Louboutin” is the exact color of the bottom of his iconic red sole shoes.

IMG_3590

Louboutin designed the bottle to mimic the ink well. It’s a French made glass bottle with a towering black cap. The cap is an homage to the stiletto on an imposing pair of shoes, the Ballerina Ultima, Louboutin made for a photography collection by David Lynch in 2007.  The heel was a teetering 8 inches and so is the bottle cap. Daring and slightly dangerous, no? For a shoe and a nail polish.

IMG_3446

The collection includes 30 additional colors in Nudes, Noirs and Pop.

IMG_3444IMG_3591IMG_3589

The polish will be sold alongside a capsule collection of shoes that pairs with the polish. Polishes can be purchased at Sephora, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf’s and Nordstrom.

But you may want to settle on the one color you can’t live without. At $50 a bottle it’s definitely an investment.  Louboutin wanted it to be an objet d’art. For $50 you may want to frame the bottle once you’ve used it all.

You can paint your fingertips with the Rouge Louboutin now and try the rest of the shades when they’re released August 30.
